How To Mass Unfollow On Instagram Quickly

How often do you wish you could stop being friends with certain people and being involved in their lives? While this might be a challenging feat to pull off in reality, it is thankfully easier on Instagram. Instagram’s unfollow option makes it easier for you to no longer see certain people’s content or have this content pop up on your feed.

While this is great, the down part is you can only unfollow one person at a time. So, what happens when you want to unfollow hundreds of profiles at once? Weeding out Instagram users from your profile one at a time can be a frustratingly long process. Although Instagram doesn’t have a mass unfollow option, we have the best solutions for getting rid of hundreds of profiles at once.

Unfollowing Other Users On Instagram

With over 1.2 billion monthly active users, Instagram is undoubtedly one of the best social media apps. It is so successful that it will reach a whopping 1.44 billion monthly active users by 2025. With these many users on Instagram, you are exposed to an unlimited option of profiles to follow. This acts as a foundation to create relationships, keep up with friends, or simply take advantage of the number of users to build a large following.

The follow option on Instagram makes it possible to be an audience to a person’s profile feed. When you choose to follow an account on Instagram, you will be able to see their profile, the number of followers they have, the number of people they are following, mutual followers you share, the content they post, their temporary story contents, and their highlights.

When you click the following icon on a person’s Instagram profile, the person is notified that you just followed them. If they own a public profile, you immediately get added to their followers’ list. However, if they own a private profile, they will need to grant you permission to view their content and be their follower by accepting your follow request.

Following accounts is a great way to keep up with someone’s life. It offers a front-seat view of the account owner’s content. But what happens when you no longer want to follow this person’s Instagram account?

Insagram offers a solution for you to quickly unfollow the person’s account without them knowing. When you follow an account, the account gets notified that they have a new follower, but when you unfollow them, they do not have any idea. However, it is essential to remember that the person’s follower count drops.

If they have just a handful of followers and you unfollow them, they can see the reduction, but they won’t know it is you unless they go through their followers’ list. Unfollowing people on Instagram is as easy as – or even easier than- following them. You have two options to do so.

Option 1

  • Open the Instagram app
  • Click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of your screen

  • You will be taken to a page with a search bar at the top and a grid of pictures and videos from other accounts. This is the Instagram discovery page.

  • Click on the search bar

  • Enter the IG username of the account you want to unfollow

  • Click on the account

  • You will be taken to the account’s profile

  • Click on the following icon just below their bio

Viola! You just unfollowed that account without a fuss.

This method is only excellent if you know the name of the account you wish to unfollow. Understandably, we do not always remember everyone’s username, so when this happens, you need to use method 2.

Option 2

Option 2 is a great way to pick the people you want straight from your profile.

  • Open the Instagram app

  • Click on the tiny profile icon on the far bottom right of your screen.
  • You will be taken to your profile. Click on the following button on the top right of your screen

  • You will be taken to a list of the people you are following. You will see their profile pictures, username, and a bar showing ‘following’ next to their usernames. Click on this bar to unfollow them.

  • When you click on this bar, it changes from grey to blue and from ‘following’ to ‘follow’.

Easy-peasy.

Although these options are great, they are not particularly useful if you want to unfollow hundreds or thousands of profiles at once. Admittedly, it will get tiring to keep searching for these profiles by name or scrolling through a never-ending list of usernames on your profile to pick and unfollow them one at a time.

Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t offer an option that allows users to unfollow more than one profile at a time. It will be nice to have a ‘select’ or ‘select all’ option to let you choose hundreds of profiles and get rid of them at a go, but this option doesn’t exist on the app. This is a shame, especially since Instagram has pretty sophisticated features.

To make matters worse, Instagram frowns down on mass unfollowing and imposes a limit on how many accounts you can unfollow. Although there is no public report or declaration stating these limits, it is crucial that you do not unfollow more than 150 accounts per day if your Instagram account is under three months old and about 600 daily if your account is over a year old.

Additionally, we recommend not unfollowing these profiles too fast. Split your unfollow activity between hourly intervals. Unfollow about 15 to 20 profiles per hour if your profile account is relatively new and less than 60 profiles per hour if your account is over a year old.

These limits were implemented to reduce inauthentic activities and engagements on the application. Generally, Instagram looks out for rushed activities or profiles where too many activities occur. They count these activities as bot-like and place a red flag on these accounts. So, unfollowing too many accounts at once can get your profile shadow-banned, temporarily restricted, or worse.

But what if you really, really need to mass unfollow profiles on your Instagram page?

Mass unfollowing profiles on your Instagram page is a great way to reduce the time that will otherwise be spent on removing every profile one after the other. Although Instagram doesn’t offer this option, there are different ways to bypass this inconvenience and still remove multiple profiles one at a time.

Reasons To Unfollow Lots Of Profiles At Once

There are many reasons why you might want to unfollow lots of users on your Instagram page at once. Some of these reasons include:

1. Remove Inactive Followers

Following many people on Instagram means you have diverse content to interact with. It is a great way to keep yourself entertained while using the app while remaining up-to-date with information from different niches on Instagram. Following people also means you have other Instagram accounts to interact with your content. After all, when you post on your profile, your content will appear on their feed.

This interaction through likes, comments, shares, and remixes increases your chance of being discovered by even more people. Due to these reasons, many Instagram users rush to follow lots of people at once in the hopes that they get exciting content to interact with and more people to interact with their profile.

However, this strategy doesn’t always pan out the way we want.  After following hundreds and even thousands of profiles, it is painful to find out that most times, these profiles do not engage with your profile. These profiles do nothing to contribute to the growth of your profile and are nothing but a number displayed on your profile.

Additionally, if you follow a dormant account that has not been sharing photos, liking pictures, or commenting on other people’s content, you should consider unfollowing them. These types of account are considered inactive accounts and contribute nothing to the growth of your account.

Following too many inactive profiles, especially if the number of your followers is small compared to them, makes your profile look like a spam account. This Is a red flag for people who discover your page as your profile doesn’t look genuine. The only way to correct this is to unfollow the accounts that are inactive and do not contribute to your page.

2. Remove People Who Unfollowed You

Did you join a train? Gain trains are organized group movements where you follow an Instagram account, and in exchange, this account will follow you back.  Joining a gain train is a quick and easy way to amass followers. On the flip side, many Instagram users take advantage of this and unfollow other members of the gain train who follow them.

When this happens, the only reasonable action to take is to unfollow the Instagram users that have unfollowed you.

3. To Start Afresh

Sometimes, revamping a former account is a better option than creating a new account from scratch. This way, you can still have your followers and a few familiar faces on your feed. When you want to start your page afresh, it only makes sense to unfollow the accounts that will not contribute to the cause of this new purpose.

Mass unfollowing the profiles you don’t need will save you the stress of creating an account or getting rid of thousands of accounts at once.

Follow or unfollow? unfollow.
