What Is An Instagram Bio?

If you are new to the social media marketing world you will need to know what an Instagram bio is. An Instagram bio is the space underneath your username on Instagram where you can add a description of yourself or your brand.

It is above the Instagram feed, which means it is part of the first impression someone will get of you. What you type into your Instagram bio should express you in just a handful of words. This may seem downright impossible in 150 characters. So where do you start?

Let’s first narrow it down by asking yourself a few questions. These are especially helpful questions if you are using Instagram for business reasons rather than personal:

  • What is your brand promise? What can customers expect to get from you and your brand?
  • What is your brand personality? How does it make your customers feel?
  • What special skills do you offer?
  • Where is the business located?
  • What is unique about your product or service?
  • What do you want people to do after visiting your Instagram profile?

How To Make a Good Instagram Bio

Now that you’ve got the wheels turning, let’s focus on some things that should be in your bio. What sort of things should make up a great Instagram bio?

Describe Yourself and Your Interests

The number one focus is you. How do you describe yourself? What is your personality like? What is important to you?

Consider adding things like:

  • Your job title: If you have an Instagram business account, it might be a good idea for your followers to know what exactly it is you do. They will then get a better understanding of what your goal or aim is. For instance, if you’re an influencer filling your Instagram story with photos of your favorite vegan recipes, and you aim to direct them to your blog, type in Vegan Food Blogger. That way people will automatically know that you are promoting your business, not just posting pictures of your infamous tofu pad thai for them to drool over.
  • Your company name: If you have a business account, write in your company name or brand name so your followers can become familiar with it.
  • What you’re known for: Have you traveled to 100 countries? Put it in your bio. Have you won a pie eating contest at the county fair 12 years in a row? Put it in your bio. Do you have a third degree black belt? Put it in your bio. Not only do you get to humble brag about your accomplishments, you also are showing off your interests at the same time.
  • Things that you love: List some of your interests, whether its sports, food, reading, language learning, the list goes on and on. The more specific you are the better! People with similar vibes will tend to be attracted to the same things, your target audience won’t resist hitting that follow button.
  • Your essence: This is not something that can be said, but something that can be shown by the way you present yourself. Are you witty? Add a few puns into your bio. Are you spiritual? Add a quote from your favorite guru that truly resonates with you. Make sure your essence is echoed in all your Instagram posts.

Social Proof

A good way to show your profile visitors that you are a worthy candidate for their attention is by providing social proof. Social proof is evidence that other people have found value or purchased a product or service offered by you. When you provide this evidence, people are more likely to take a positive action toward you or your brand.

An example of providing social proof is by using branded hashtags in your bio. Although these hashtags won’t show up in search results, clicking on them will show all the content your fans and followers have posted about you or your brand.

Add a CTA (Call to action)

A CTA or call to action refers to a prompt that guides the user to the next step or action you want them to take. CTAs are essential in Instagram marketing because, without them, a user would struggle to see the route to buying your product or signing up for a service.

Make it clear to them what you’d like them to do. In your Instagram bio, a good CTA could be something like “sign up for my course”, “check out my blog”, or “shop my online store”. It should be directing them to the corresponding link in your bio.

Instagram’s mobile-only version has CTA buttons that allow the user to take a direct action you suggest. You can find this feature under Action Buttons in the editing section of your business profile.

Contact Information

You will want your contact info easily accessible to people. This includes your phone number, email, or business address. You can also direct them to your DMs if that is your preferred contact method. There is another mobile-only feature that allows you to insert buttons for your contact information. This super-simple method easily allows the user to directly get in touch with you from the ‘gram.

Link in Bio

Only one clickable link is allowed in Instagram bios. Instagram doesn’t let you use clickable links in your feed posts, so this means your bio link holds a lot of value. What is your most important link? Perhaps it is your online store website, a special marketing campaign, or even your latest blog post.

Or perhaps it is your Tappie landing page where you have set up multiple links for Instagram users to browse through (and to pay you!). You can also use your link to direct the traffic to another platform that you are more active on. Perhaps your YouTube channel is poppin right now and you’d rather the users go there to check you out.

Draw Attention

There are several ways to catch the user’s eye and get them to read your bio.

  • Emojis: People are more likely to be attracted to an image than text. And since the space in your bio is limited, it is the perfect place for emojis. Use emojis; they’re fun, relatable, and boost connection with the users.
  • Symbols: You can use special symbols to help break up text in your bio. To browse symbols to choose from, open up a Google Doc, click Insert, then Special characters. If you are looking for something specific you can search by keyword or draw the shape of the symbol you want. Once it appears in the document, simply copy/paste it to your Instagram bio.
  • Unique fonts: Although there is only one font available for the Insta bio, there are other ways to add fonts. There are plenty of tools out there for Instagram fonts. They can help you create custom fonts that map your text to existing special characters. You may want to use these different fonts sparingly for emphasis rather than plastered throughout the bio. It may make it look busy and overworked. Simply copy/paste the text to your bio and you’re good to go!
  • Line breaks: Since people often don’t read walls of texts, it may be a good idea to insert line breaks. This breaks up the text, making it easier to read. To add line breaks, just format it the way you would like it to appear and it will show up that way in your bio. If you are on mobile, however, you may want to use a notes app. Then copy/paste it into your Instagram bio.
